Add and arrange a lesson’s blocks

A lesson is a page of blocks: video, text, exercise, summary, table… and their order is the order of the explanation for your student. This lesson shows how to put each block exactly where you want it, see what it still needs, move it between sections, copy it to another lesson or keep it for all your courses — by mouse or by keyboard.

  • About 6 minutes
  • 6 steps

Who can do it: Requires the permission to edit lessons in your role.

In 6 steps

  1. 1Add a block after the one you want: “+”, “Add a block” or Ctrl+K.
  2. 2Know the blocks by tab, the main video and the old blocks.
  3. 3Finish the amber block: it tells you what it needs.
  4. 4Move a block from its bar and menu: up, down, to a section, to the start.

  1. 5Arrange from the structure: fold sections, drag, select several blocks.
  2. 6Reuse your blocks: copy them to another lesson, save them, or paste them.

Before you start

  • A lesson open in the lesson editor (click it in the curriculum).
  • The permission to edit lessons.
  • New to the editor? The “Lesson editor” lesson walks through every block and its properties.
  1. Step 1 of 6

Add the block in its place

Three ways: “Add a block” under the last block, the “+” that appears beside a block you hover to insert after it, or Ctrl+K to insert after the active block. The gallery header says where it will land: “After “…””. Search, or pick from “All”, “Explain”, “Practice”, “Summarize”, “Attach”, “Organize”, “Saved”, and use the keyboard: “Arrows to move · Enter to add · Esc to close”. If you copied blocks, “Paste” shows up.

    On screenAdd a blockAllExplainPracticeSummarizeAttachOrganizeSavedPaste

TipClick the block to add after first, then Ctrl+K: nothing to drag afterwards.

  2. Step 2 of 6

The blocks, and the main video

“Explain”: text, video, image, audio, table, code. “Practice”: exercise, interactive. “Summarize”: note, summary. “Attach”: PDF. “Organize”: section, toggle. The lesson’s first video is the “Main video”: it shows at the top, and students resume it where they left off. In older lessons you may meet “Divider”, “Question” or “Quiz”: blocks that can’t be added any more; questions now go in “Lesson questions” at the end.

TipWant another video on top? Make it the lesson’s first video.

  3. Step 3 of 6

The amber block: what it needs

An unfinished block has an amber edge and a line saying what it needs: “Write the text”, “Add the video”, “Add the image”, “Add the file”, “Name the section”, “Finish the problem and its solution steps”, “Fill in the table”, “Paste a link from a supported site”, “Give it a title and write what’s inside”. In the structure, a yellow dot marks it. A block you started and didn’t finish — a problem without its solution steps, a toggle with a title and nothing inside, a table with gaps — is counted in the number beside “Publish” on the button, and named under “Before publishing” in the publish panel, with “Go” to take you to it. A block with nothing at all in it — no words, no file — isn’t counted: it stays in your draft and never reaches students, and the panel says so quietly: “1 empty block won't reach students”.

On screenWrite the textAdd the videoAdd the imageAdd the fileName the sectionFinish the problem and its solution stepsFill in the tablePaste a link from a supported siteGive it a title and write what’s inside1 empty block won't reach students

TipA video block counts too while its video is still uploading (“Video 1 — still uploading, wait for it to finish”), or when its upload or processing failed (“Video 1 — the upload failed, upload it again”). A video that is processing doesn’t block: students see it once it’s done.

Heads-upA lesson with a block you started and didn’t finish, or a video whose upload didn’t complete, doesn’t publish: finish it or delete it.

  4. Step 4 of 6

    Move a block

Click a block — or reach it with Tab — to make it active: on its edge, a bar with ↑ ↓, “Duplicate”, the eye “Hide from students”, Noqta’s button and ⋯. In ⋯: “Move up”, “Move down”, “Move to a section” — including “Start of the lesson (outside sections)” — “Turn into…” (text, summary, toggle or a note type), “Copy to another lesson”, “Save to your library” and “Delete”. By keyboard: ↑ and ↓ go from block to block, Ctrl+↑ and Ctrl+↓ move, Ctrl+D duplicates and ⌫ deletes — those last two are written beside “Duplicate” and “Delete” in ⋯.

TipA hidden block stays in your draft, marked “Hidden from students”, and never reaches them.

  5. Step 5 of 6

    Arrange from the structure

The “Lesson structure” (Ctrl+\) shows one line per block under its section: yellow dot = unfinished, crossed eye = hidden, and after publishing the share of students who got that far. Drag lines to reorder, and “Collapse section” / “Expand section (3)” to read a long lesson. To select several blocks: Ctrl (⌘ on Mac) + click, or tick them in the structure; a dark bar appears: “Move”, “To another lesson”, “Duplicate”, “Copy”, “Hide”, “Delete” and “Clear selection”.

On screenLesson structureCollapse sectionMoveTo another lessonDuplicateCopyHideDeleteClear selection

TipWhere the share drops suddenly in the structure, your students stop: split or shorten that block.

  6. Step 6 of 6

    Reuse your blocks

“Copy to another lesson”: “Added at the end of the lesson you pick, as a draft students won't see until you publish.” “Save to your library”: the block shows in the gallery’s “Saved” tab in every lesson (remove it from there any time). Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V paste blocks after the active block, even in another lesson — or “Paste copied blocks”. For the whole lesson’s shape: ⋯ → “Save the lesson layout as a template”.

On screenCopy to another lessonSave to your librarySavedPaste copied blocks

TipEvery change undoes with “Undo” and comes back with “Redo”.

Questions

I added a block and it landed at the end — how do I put it in the middle?

Use the “+” beside the block to add after, or click it then Ctrl+K. Otherwise ⋯ → “Move up”, or drag it in the structure.

How do I move a block to another section?

⋯ → “Move to a section” and pick it, or “Start of the lesson (outside sections)”. Or drag it under the section in the structure.

I copied blocks to another lesson — do its students see them?

Not yet: they are added at the end as a draft, and students see them only once you publish that lesson.

Why is the block amber?

It is missing something, and its line says what: text, video, link, solution steps… If you started it, finish it or delete it before publishing; if you left it completely empty, it doesn’t stop the publish: it stays in your draft and never reaches students.

Why can’t I find “Quiz” or “Divider” any more?

They can no longer be added. Questions go in “Lesson questions” at the end, and sections split the lesson.
