# The gradebook: every mark, the weighted average and the rank

> The gradebook is the sheet a teacher fills at the end of every term: each student, their mark on every test and exam, their average, grade and rank. On Dirassa Plus it fills itself from your marking: you don’t copy a single mark. You choose the coefficients once, the average is computed for everyone, and everything follows any mark you change. In this lesson Mourad opens the calligraphy gradebook: two tests and an exam, 22 students. The same gradebook serves a maths tutor preparing the baccalaureate, or a trainer combining three assessment modules.

- Time: About 5 minutes
- Who can do it: Needs access to marking. Changing coefficients and saving the gradebook is for whoever manages the course.

## In short
1. From the course’s “Papers” tab, or any paper’s page: “Gradebook”.
2. A row per student, a column per published test and exam, then average, grade and rank.
3. Choose the counted papers and each one’s coefficient, the method and absences; then “Save gradebook”.
4. Read the cells: not sat yet, being marked, absent; and a “Partial average” for anyone missing something.
5. Pick the group, then “Export CSV” for Excel or “Print”.
6. “Certificate from this gradebook”: a certificate that reads its average and follows every change you save.

## Before you start
- Publish at least one test or exam in the course: practice papers don’t enter the gradebook.
- Mark the open questions: an answer awaiting your marking shows as being marked, not as a mark.

## The steps

### 1. Open the “Gradebook”
In the course, the papers tab: beside the filters, the “Gradebook” button, shown once a test or exam is published. From any paper’s page (results and marking), the “Gradebook” link beside its title. The gradebook opens with the course’s name, and “Papers” to go back. If there’s nothing to count yet: “No papers to count yet” with “To papers”.
On screen: «Gradebook»، «Papers»، «No papers to count yet»، «To papers»
Tip: Ask Noqta “open the gradebook” from any page of the course, or start the gradebook tour to see each part on the page itself.

### 2. Reading the gradebook
On top, four numbers: “Students”, “Class average /20”, “10 and above” (16/19: among complete results) and “Incomplete results” (how many students don’t have a complete average yet, in warning colour). Then the table: the “Student” column — click its header to switch between “Student · by rank” and “Student · by name” — then a column per paper: its name, “Exam” or “Test”, its coefficient, and “closed” or “hidden” where relevant. Then “Average /20” (or “Total /20”), “Grade” and “Rank”. At the bottom: marks out of 20 as you marked them, even before students see them; grades on the baccalaureate scale; rank among complete results.
On screen: «Students»، «Class average /20»، «10 and above»، «Incomplete results»، «Student · by rank»، «Student · by name»، «Exam»، «Test»، «closed»، «hidden»، «Average /20»، «Total /20»، «Grade»، «Rank»
Tip: The gradebook shows your marks before release: review the averages before you close the exam and issue certificates.
Heads-up: The mark counted is each paper’s “Attempt that counts” (the best or the last), exactly as for the certificate.

### 3. Coefficients, method and absences
Above each column, a “Count …” box and a “Coefficient of …”. The first time, the gradebook reads: “Not saved yet: suggested coefficients (exams × 2)”. Mourad’s example: Ruqaa test × 1, Naskh test × 1, final exam × 2. Under the numbers, a bar: “Method” — “Weighted average” or “Points total”; and “Missed a paper” — “no average until they sit it” or “zero once it closes”. Every change recomputes the table at once, with “Unsaved changes”. Then “Save gradebook”: “Gradebook saved.” — and if certificates are built on it, they recheck their students.
On screen: «Not saved yet: suggested coefficients (exams × 2)»، «Method»، «Weighted average»، «Points total»، «Missed a paper»، «no average until they sit it»، «zero once it closes»، «Unsaved changes»، «Save gradebook»، «Gradebook saved.»
Tip: A diagnostic test at the start of term? Untick “Count”: it stays visible in the gradebook without entering the average.
Heads-up: “zero once it closes” counts the zero only when the paper closes: until then the student still has time to sit it.

### 4. The cells: a mark, being marked, absent
Each cell holds a mark out of 20 (red below 10), or its state: “—” (not sat yet: the paper is open), “marking” (awaiting marking) or “abs” (absent: paper closed); with “zero once it closes” it becomes 0 in red (absent: counts zero). Anyone missing something has no average yet: their cell names the paper waiting or missing, and hovering it shows “Partial average: 14.5/20”. They don’t enter the ranking until their results are complete. So the rank stays true: among complete results only, and equal averages share a rank.
On screen: «not sat yet»، «marking»، «awaiting marking»، «abs»، «absent: paper closed»، «absent: counts zero»، «Partial average»
Tip: Lots of papers awaiting marking? Open marking from the menu: the answers wait for you one by one.

### 5. Groups, Excel and printing
If the course has groups, the gradebook offers “Group”: “All students” or one group, and the class and rank are computed within that group. “Export CSV” downloads a file named after the course: student, each paper, average, grade, rank — it opens straight in Excel with your locale’s separators. “Print” prints the table alone: buttons and unticked papers disappear.
On screen: «Group»، «All students»، «Export CSV»، «Print»
Tip: A gradebook for parents or school management? “Print”, then “Save as PDF” in the print window.

### 6. “Certificate from this gradebook”
After “Save gradebook”, “Certificate from this gradebook” appears: it opens “New certificate” for this course (or the chosen group) at the template step, with the conditions ready: lessons completed and the gradebook average. If certificates already read it, the gradebook says so: “Certificates computed from this gradebook: … Any change you save here applies to them.” Change a coefficient and save: the certificate rechecks by itself, and anyone newly eligible receives it. In any average-based certificate’s conditions, choose “Gradebook” instead of “Chosen here” to link it to the gradebook; Noqta suggests it when the course has a saved gradebook.
On screen: «Certificate from this gradebook»، «Chosen here»، «Gradebook»
Tip: Build every certificate of the course on the gradebook: one coefficient changes in one place, and everything follows.
Heads-up: Certificates already issued don’t change with the gradebook: only those not yet issued do.

## Next
- Make it a certificate: Tiers, rank and how it’s granted: the lesson “When the certificate is granted”.
- Release results: Close the paper so averages complete: the lesson “Grading and results”.
- A new paper: Another test or exam joins the gradebook once published: the lesson “Papers”.

## Questions

**Do students see the gradebook?**
No. It’s for you and your team. The student sees their result on each paper once released, and their average on the certificate card if it counts.

**Why do some students have no rank?**
Their results are incomplete: a paper not sat or awaiting marking. The rank counts complete results only.

**Do practice papers enter the gradebook?**
No: only published tests and exams.

**I changed a mark in marking: does the gradebook change?**
Yes, at once: the gradebook is read from your marking every time it opens.

**The file opens in Excel with mixed-up columns**
The gradebook writes separators and decimal marks for your dashboard’s language. With Excel in another language, use “Data → From Text” and pick the separator.
